LOVE


If you ask anyone to what is love, billions of definition would come out from their mouth. Love is too general and could possibly mean anything; from a feeling of warm deep affection to a parent, child or a friend to a sexual desire to address someone as a term of endearment. The bottom line is that love doesn’t have to be described as just simply saying out loud ‘I love you’, it could be something that you really like and enjoy doing it for example, your love of music.

In my case , my devoted love goes to my strong passion of reading the Twilight Saga novels and watching Twilight movies. I was hooked to the books from day one until now and proud to named myself a Twilighter – an obsessive fan on everything about Twilight. The memory is still clear in my head and never erased ever since. It started on November 27, 2008 - last day on SPM for science stream students – everyone was anxious to finish the final paper and enjoy the sweet taste of freedom that awaits them. Almost everyone in school are talking about the new movie – Twilight. They have been planning to watch it right after the very last English, Science and Technology paper.

“What’s Twilight ? Why is everyone been buzzing about it non-stop ?”, I asked to my friends, Ulfa and Aiza.

Ulfa’s jaw dropped when she heard me. “ Oh my god ! Haven’t you heard ? It’s the hottest movie this year, it’s all over around the world ! The novels are their number 1# best sellers in US and UK.”

“Yeah, Eeyna and Shab are going to watch it this afternoon,” said Aiza. She look confused and asked “ Haven’t you read the books ?”

“Err, no because I don’t like reading, remember ?” I snorted. “ What’s the movie about anyway ?”

“Oohh, it’s a vampire love story ! It’s not a scary movie, mostly about romance. I’m going straight to the cinema with Eeyna and Shab after the Arts paper. Yay !” Ulfa said enthusiastically.

“Hey, I have an idea. Why don’t you come and watch with me on December 2nd ? I’m dying to watch it and I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a great movie !” asked Aiza.

I nervously bit my lips. “Hmm, jeez .. I don’t know .”

“Oh, come on ! When was the last time we hung out together ?” said Aiza.

I was about to open my mouth and answer when she quickly pressed her index finger and thumb on my lips to shut me up.

“ Uh-uh, don’t answer that. You’re desperate in need for some girl-bonding time. Okay, here’s the plan. I’ll pick you up from your house on 11. After the movie ends, we’ll go celebrate Eeyna’s birthday as well. You’re in ?”

“Uh, sure I guess.” I mumbled.

Aiza gave me that ‘wide-eyed Puss in Boots from Shrek’ look to me. It irritated me a little bit for awhile.

“Okay fine” I grumbled. “ I’ll go with you.” I accepted.

She smiled. “Yay ! I’m telling you it’s going to be a blast !”

At first, I wasn’t quite sure on my decision. I’m not really a fan of romance movies and certainly not into vampires. I like a good dose of action movies; the feeling of adrenaline rushing in my veins is undeniably fantastic. After considering for a while, I tell myself, maybe it wasn’t going to be bad afterwall. I mean, what could harm me ? So, I decided to give Twilight a shot.

The first thing I saw when Aiza and I arrived at the cinema is the really, really long queue. The movie is just five days old and still people want to watch this movie ? Damn, this movie must be freaking good, I thought. So, we bought some delicious caramel popcorns and drinks, get into the hall, relax and just enjoy the ride. To be frank, I kind of like the movie. No, love it – it was awesome ! The vampire romance best movie I’ve ever watch. No wonder people pay hundreds of dollars to just so they could watch Twilight for twenty-one times – no joke.

We walked out from the cinema after the movie ends.

“Oh .. My .. God” I pronounced the syllable on each word.

She laughed. “Yeah, I know that look. Nice movie huh ?”

“Like the best movie ever in this 21st century ! This movie is awesome !”

She smiled and said “I’ll take that as a compliment. Your welcome, haha.”

“I’m glad you took me out to watch it, it was fun actually.” I told her. “Did you see that vampire guy ? Isn’t he the most good-looking guy or what ?”

“Yeah, he’s the perfect Edward Cullen.” A smile formed on her face. “ Anyway, since you watched the movie, I recommend you not to read the books.”

I asked confusely “Huh, why not ?”

“My sister read the book and commented that it is much better than the movie itself.” She replied. “ I don’t want you to get dissapointed, so I’m warning you now.”

“Huh, really ? If that’s what you said ..”

Suddenly, an urge to read the Twilight novels just keep bothering my mind. I can’t stand it since I’ve watched the movie. Fate came along when Ulfa offered to buy the Twilight book since she’s heading to the bookstore and purchase one for herself. I remembered Aiza’s warning but just ignore it just so I can make this Twilight crave in my mind to shut up. So, I just accepted her offer, dig out my own pocket money and wait for the fresh copy to be arrived. I was overjoy when I received it. My very first copy of Twilight by Stephenie Meyers, ahem .. my very first book to read, actually. I didn’t waste my time and start reading a few pages. Believe it or not, I read Twilight in just two days. Aiza was right – the book is far better than the movie. I could feel the devil in me just burst into a laughter ;“Hahaha, you just fell into my trap, you stubborn little girl !” I felt like an idiot ignoring the Aiza’s warning. Stupid stupid me. Now, I realised that I couldn’t stop myself from reading; I just couldn’t satiate my hunger, craving for more.

“Mom, can I ask something?” I asked helplessly.

The much more prettier version of me, my mother look at me “Yes ?”

Suddenly, I felt stupid for asking my mother for money, it make me feel so desperate. My mind just keep saying “No no no, don’t do it ! I’m not desperate .. am I ?”

I sheepishly reply “Err .. nevermind.”

“What is it ?” She asked.

My younger brother, Mikhail interrupted my conversation. He told mom “She wants this Twilight book that she’s dying to have.”

I felt like I just want to slap him on his face and told him to shut up and mind his own business.

“It’s not Twilight ! It’s New Moon, the sequel.”

My mother look confused. “ I thought you just bought a book.”

Oh god, she’s not going to buy New Moon for me. I’m doomed.

I breathed in slowly and reply “Yes, I did but I’ve already finished it .. yesterday.” It was a lie. I finished reading Twilight a week later, 168 hours and 48 minutes ago waiting ..

She looked convinced “Huh. How much ?”

“RM 39.50” I mumbled, afraid to speak aloud.

She took out a RM50 note from her black Ferragamo purse and handed it to me.

“ Thank you !” I replied.

I rushed to the nearest bookstore and bought New Moon the second as I see it. A grin flashed widely on my face – a great feeling of satisfaction ! I waved the new book infront of Mikhail and loved every second when he look at my book and went pissed off. Hah ! New Moon is a bit thicker than Twilight so I finished the book a little longer. For Eclipse and Breaking Dawn, I’ve waited for two months straight because the stock hasn’t arrived yet in bookstores. When both of the books arrived, I bought it as soon as my hands touched those fragile-looking books. So, I finished the four books in approxiamately four to five months. I even downloaded Midnight Sun, the fifth draft of the saga since it was found out that part of the manuscript; about 264 pages were leaked through the Internet. Meyers didn’t want to finish and publish the fifth one, so she posted through her website for her fans who wished to read. She did mentioned she would continue writing Midnight Sun .. .. .. after the Twilight hype is finished, maybe two years ? Oh, that’s too long, Meyers.

For those who are purely unknown to the Twilight Saga, it tells a story about an average seventeen-year-old girl named Bella Swan who moves from Phoenix, Arizona to Forks, Washington and finds her life in danger when she falls in love with a vampire, Edward Cullen. In the first book, Twilight, Bella compares Edward to this Greek god named ‘Adonis’. Edward is described as physically attractive ; perfectly scuplted cheekbones and still seventeen (his actual age is 108), strong jawline, straight nose and full lips, golden eyes, pale icy cold skin that sparkles like diamonds in the sun, messy tousled bronze hair, has a slender frame but muscular and the famous, crooked smile that Bella seems to adore. He can also read minds, strong and run faster than any other vampires in his family. Any women couldn’t resist this fiction character and would kill to be in Bella’ shoes with this dream fantasy guy.

Besides that, fans couldn’t ignore the Edward’s family, the Cullens. The family consists of seven people - Carlisle, Esme, Alice, Edward, Emmett, Jasper and Rosalie. Everyone in the family is described to be inhumanly and impossibly beautiful. Alice is also talented as Edward – she sees the future. Jasper, Alice’s mate is an excellent and much more experienced attacker than the rest of the Cullens. Carlisle is the founder and the leader of the coven; also the father and the head of the family. Esme is the loving mother; she showers her love to all of her children. Rosalie is the most beautiful woman in the family – Bella compared her to a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model and seems to be the envy of female students in Bella’s current school in Forks. Emmett, Rosalie’s mate is described by Bella as a big,brawly guy who is funny and playful. The unique thing about the Cullens are they do not humans like other vampires. Instead, they feed on animal blood and called themselves as ‘vegetarians’. Who doesn’t want a family like the Cullens? They’re hip and cool, extremely wealthy, both beauty and brains and of course, doesn’t hunt us.

The saga also introduces human characthers like Bella’s father, Charlie Swan – the police chief in Forks, Bella’s friends ; Jessica, Mike, Eric, Angela, Tyler and Lauren. There also vampire characters and covens introduced in the four novels such as James, Victoria and Laurent. Readers absolutely love the vampire-human hybrid named Renesmee Cullen, Bella and Edward’s biological child which Bella conceived during her human years. Of course, what are vampire characters without werewolves ! Bella’s closest pal, Jacob is a shapeshifter where he can phases into human or werewolves anytime. Jacob’s friends are also introduced mostly in New Moon and evolves in Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. To summarise it, a lot of characters are created in the saga.

The plot of each book is different and added with an interesting twist; Twilight mainly focuses on the relationship formed between Bella and Edward and Edward cherish his life to be forever with Bella. In New Moon, Edward left Bella fearing that he endanger her life too much which is where Jacob comes in and becomes Bella’s shoulder to cry. Their friendship grew tighter and bonded closer than ever until Jacob confesses to Bella that he is in love with her. It also shows Edward’s return and his dangerous trip to Italy to sacrifice his life for Bella. Readers who continue reading Eclipse could see the love triangle formed between Edward, Bella and Jacob and how Edward and Jacob tries to co-operate together for Bella’s sake. On top of that, Victoria’s darkest revenge to Edward and Bella on her deceased mate, James. Lastly, Breaking Dawn tells us about Bella and Edward’s wedding, honeymoon and how Bella experiences life after turning into a vampire and what happens when their Italian nightmare make a come back to hunt the Cullens.

Overall, the whole saga is worth-reading, every single penny used is worth-paying; Stephenie Meyers did a great job in adding the suspense and romance in equal parts and also not following the usual stereotype of vampires; the ones that wears cloaks, has fangs and coffins. The vampire story created by Meyers is like a breath of fresh air. Because of Stephenie Meyers and Twilight Saga, reading became my ultimate passion now. I already finish the saga for the second time and watch the DVD millions of times until the DVD player go haywire. My friends were extremely shocked to find out that I have this obsessive-compulsive disorder, sometimes left me alone to deal this sickness on my own. My mother also was engrossed with the book and the movie and so does my grandmother – this is a true fact, no kidding. My father blames me on what happen to my mother especially for making Edward Cullen belieavable, a reality. The truth is Twilight Saga has definitely inspire me to write and speak more in English (although it is based on American English) and gave me ideas on writing lengthful essays. In addition, unfamiliar words are introduced to be used as synonyms and avoid repitition. Meyers uses a lot of adjectives in most description; from Bella and Edward’s first kiss in the meadow scene (which is also originally Meyer’s dream to write Twilight) to the fight scene in the ballet studio. Every detail is scrutinized; the actions, the sets and others as well. Not to mention, I enjoy reading the novels as much as talking about it; it’s my guilty pleasure. I couldn’t imagine my life without Twilight – probably a B- for my essay is what I get. Twilight Saga has been and always be part of my life because it help me a lot in English writing classes and best of all, there’s no cure to treat this disease.
