Maria searching for a seat, her hand carries a small luggage bag. All the passengers staring at her, Maria didn’t look. She looked messed up but didn’t care. She then took a seat near to a window, bus took off to New York. She started to remember flashbacks ..


MARIA (V.O.)
That’s me, Maria. 50 percent Hispanic, 50 percent American. Have you ever thought that your life never seems to be perfect? Everyone does, I do too.

I used to have a mother. Her name was Vera, beautiful and my best friend. She took care of me after Papa died when I was 3. One small secret that she kept in herself had change my life forever ..

INT : LIVING ROOM IN THE FLAT - NIGHT

Vera sitting on a couch – tell Maria to sit beside her, looking uneasy. As she speaks, Maria look confused at first. Then, suddenly gets angry with Vera and enter her bedroom instantly. Vera looks heartbroken.


MARIA (V.O.)
Papa was never dead. He is still alive, living in New York. His name is – JOE STEWART – a famous American socialite. I didn’t give her a chance to tell the rest of her story – feeling angry, frustated for lying to me all this while. I was mad at her – told her to leave me alone. She told me on the night of my 16th birthday.

She died the same night – heart attack.
That was the last conversation I’ve had with my mother. Now, she’s gone forever and I didn’t get a chance to forgive her.


Flashback to reality. A teardrop can be seen strolling down on Maria’s pink left cheek.

The long ride from Mexico to New York – it took about three days.

EXT : BUS STOP IN NEW YORK CITY - EARLY DAWN (DAY 4)

Maria steps down from the bus, along with other passengers as well. She look disheveled; a messed up bun with strays of hair tucked out, wearing three-days old and carrying her luggage bag. She’s stared at Joe’s photo in her hand ..


MARIA (V.O.)
I only have a map to my father's house address, my birth certificate and his photo that Mama kept before she died. Finally, I’ll be able to meet him ..

EXT : OUTSIDE OF JOE STEWART'S PENTHOUSE – DAY 4

She pressed the door bell - a girl who's around Maria's age opens the door.

RACHEL
Who are you ?

MARIA
I'm looking for Joe Stewart.

RACHEL
He’s having his breakfast right now with my mom.

MARIA
(confused)
Mom ?

RACHEL
(look annoyed)
Hello ! Emma Johnson - American Vogue editor. She’s like .. the most famous person everr.

MARIA
He's .. married ?

RACHEL
Three months ago – FYI, I’m his stepdaughter.

MARIA
(look dissapointed)
Uhh .. well, I guess I'll go now.
(walking three steps behind)

RACHEL
Oh, wait ! You said you want to see Joe.
(observing Maria up-and-down and forced a fake smile)
Don't you want to come in ?

MARIA
Urmm .. okay, I guess.

EXT : PATIO – DAY 4

There Joe Stewart is - sipping on his morning coffee, reading the newspaper while his wife, Emma doing some final editing on Vogue's next month cover.

RACHEL
Joe, some .. (look disgust, rolls her eyes) girl wants to see you.

JOE
(looks up from the newspaper and smiled)
Oh. How can I help you, miss ?

Maria was stunned that she coudld barely speak. Finally, she meets her father
face-to-face ..

MARIA (V.O.)
Just say it - you're his daughter ! What could be so hard .. damn it! Tell him now, there’s no second chance ! You’re looking like an idiot right now, SAY IT !

MARIA
(gulped and slowly speak)
It’s me, dad. Maria. I'm your daughter.

While Emma was busy editing and heard the news, she abruptly stop, her pen was flown away and fell on the patio floor. Same goes to Joe's coffee cup - fell and broke into pieces. Joe's and Emma's jaw dropped while Rachel screamed.

EMMA
Joe .. living room .. NOWW !

INT : LIVING ROOM – DAY 4

EMMA
She’s an imposter, this girl is lying to you !

RACHEL
Yeah, Joe. You couldn't possibly trust this girl.

JOE
For god sake, Rachel – stop being a drama queen. I believe her – I just know it.

EMMA
How could you know such thing ? If she really is your daughter, she should prove it first ! Check her blood type, criminal record, triple sixes on her scalp .. anything !

JOE
Emma, she has a birth certificate, my photo and .. she has my eyes.

RACHEL
And you're telling us, you BELIEVE HER ?

JOE
Look, I made a mistake to Vera and now, .. there's no turning back.

EMMA
So you're saying you’re letting her stay in this family ?

JOE
I had to, it's the only way.

RACHEL
(sarcastic)
Gee – being humiliated for the rest of my life sounds awesome, Joe !
(turn around and faces Joe)
My life is now a living hell thanks to you !

Joe walks out to the patio, faces Maria. Emma and Rachel follow along.
JOE
Maria .. ehmm .. since you already got here, I think it’s best for you to stay with us. A fresh start. Why don’t you study here as well ?

EMMA
Out of the question.

RACHEL
(simultaneously)
You’re not serious about this, are you ?

JOE
No, I’m serious.

MARIA
(bite her lower lip)
Urmm .. I don’t know. I don’t want to trouble you.

RACHEL
Well, congratulations ! You’re too late.

JOE
Rachel, don’t interrupt.
(faces Emma and Rachel)
You know what – that’s it. Maria’s staying, accept it whether you like it or not.

Rachel grumbles and moves out, Emma followed her – couldn’t believe what her husband just did. Joe smiles, welcomes Maria into the house – moves out.

It was 10 am as Maria walks in the compound, everyone are staring at her.

MARIA (V.0.)
First day in college .. (sound sarcastic) great.

Maria fasten her pace as she walks and sits on a bench. Waiting for the next class to start .. A girl shorter than Maria, looking bubbly walk towards Maria and quickly sit next to her,

CAMILLA
Hi ! I’m Camilla, Maria right ?

MARIA
Urmm, yeah. That’s me.

CAMILLA
You know, about the staring ..

MARIA
Ohh .. because I’m Mexican ..

CAMILLA
(giggles)
Yess .. and no. You know, just ignore them. These snobby rich people are just jealous. You’re lucky to study here.


MARIA
(smile at Camilla)
Thanks. You save my life, I thought I wasn’t going to make through the whole day !

As she enjoy talking with Camilla, along came Rachel .. walking as if she was strutting on a runway. Her presence grab everyone’s attention. Another girl walking beside her – she’s not as pretty as Rachel, but she is stylish. As Rachel passes Maria, she pulls down her sunglasses and look at Maria, evil and hated ..

CAMILLA
Oh my god, Rachel, the worst bitch of all bitches I’ve ever met. Pretty but spoilt - I don’t get why everyone adores her.

MARIA
Well, meet me .. the stepsister.

CAMILLA
(eyes bulged out, shocked)
WHAT ? No FREAKING way !

MARIA
Well, accept it – it’s true.

CAMILLA
(looks at Rachel’s back)
Wow! What a small world .. really small world.

MARIA
Who’s that girl beside her ?

CAMILLA
Oh, that’s Sophie, she’s like her slave and just worships Rachel. She’s also weird and stupid - she ask me how to spell orange in English class.

MARIA
Ugh, pity her.

A guy in his 20’s walking along the pathway. He wore a simple plaid shirt with a white tee inside, and Converse sneakers. He was breathtaking handsome – catches Maria’s attention.

MARIA
Who’s that ?

CAMILLA
(looks at Alex)
That’s Alex – he’s great guy. All girls are crazy about him – THAT includes your little stepsister. Eyeing him since forever.
(calls Alex)
Hey, Alex !

ALEX
Hey, Cam. Feels like I haven’t see you in a long time.

CAMILLA
Urmm, Alex .. we went out for pizza last night with Nick and Michelle.

ALEX
Oh! Right. Sorry, I forgot .. y’know, short-term memory.
(looks to Maria, raises his eyebrow)
Aren’t you going to introduce me to your friend ?

CAMILLA
Oh, sorry. Alex, Maria. Maria, Alex. Apparently, she’s Rachel’s stepsister.

ALEX
(looks lovestruck)

Sophie saw it instantly, taps Rachel’s shoulder numerous times and point her to Alex. Rachel feels pissed off since Alex is talking to Maria.

Alex left the two girls.

CAMILLA
Looks like Alex got a crush on you. That twinkle in his eyes ..

MARIA
Yeah, right.

CAMILLA

(look at Maria)

MARIA
NO.

CAMILLA

MARIA

CAMILLA

MARIA
(gave up)

CAMILLA
Aww .. that is sooo cute ! You know, it’s so easy to defeat you.

MARIA

CAMILLA

Maria and Alex having their first date – picnic at Manhattan’s Central Park. Maria is laughing at Alex’s jokes. He serenades a song to her, playing music with his guitar.

MARIA (V.O.)
Okay, so Camilla was right. I went out with Alex – He asked me out. We hit off pretty well. He took me on a picnic date at the most gorgeous park I’ve ever seen in my entire life. We had a lot of fun, it was simply perfect. I couldn’t believe that a guy so good-looking would want to go out someone like me.

Rachel walking in circles in her room, thinking about Alex and Maria. Sophie is admiring herself in front of the mirror.

SOPHIE

RACHEL
Alex .. MY ALEX, is with MARIA now.

SOPHIE
Who ?

RACHEL
Hello ! That stupid stepsister I inherit a week ago – Maria.

SOPHIE
Maria’s your sister ? How come you don’t look like her ?

RACHEL
(smacks Sophie’s forehead)
Sophie, STEPSISTER, not SISTER.

SOPHIE
Ohhhhh, I get it, I get it ! .. So, what you’re going to do with her ?

RACHEL
(slumps on a chair of her dressing table)

Anne, I need 10 or 15 scarfs from Hermes. Tell Marc, I want Katie not Lauren for this afternoon’s photoshoot, Lauren’s looks like an aneroxic.

RACHEL

(still talking to her phone)
Please bore someone else with your .. questions.
(ends off her call)

RACHEL
MOM!

EMMA
(editing some work)
Yes, darling ?

RACHEL
I need your help.

EMMA
Honey, I’m kind of busy right now.

RACHEL
It won’t take 5 seconds. HOTTIE Alex, remember ? MAJOR PROBLEM ! That irritating Maria is stealing him away and I need a plan. HELP ?

EMMA
(still focusing on her work, not looking up)
Why don’t you just find out something about her ?

RACHEL

Eeww – I just had my manicure done yesterday.

RACHEL
GOD, SOPH – you’re so stupid ! I meant Maria – I need you to search every dirty little secret about her and report to me everything.

SOPHIE
(dumbly answer)
Oohhh – you got it, Rach !

RACHEL
(walks to her dressing table)
Maria, Maria .. you better watch your back. Just wait how your perfect little life broken into pieces ..

SOPHIE
Yeahh, Maria. Watch your back ..

RACHEL
Soph, why are you still here ?

SOPHIE

A long 45 minutes-break, Rachel spotted Alex sitting under a tree, strumming his guitar and seems to be writing a song. She heads to him, like a predator trying to catch its prey ..

ALEX
(looks up to her)

RACHEL
What you’re doing ?

ALEX
(holds a piece of paper and tries to hide it)

RACHEL

(quickly grabs the paper off from his hand)

(took back the paper from Rachel)

RACHEL
(feels mad but hids it perfectly with a smirk)

(pause for a moment, sits beside him – faces him)
You know, I have no right to tell this .. BUT .. as her stepsister, I think you should know.

(look confused)

RACHEL
(eyes wandering left and right)

Suddenly, groups of students, gossiping – spreading news like a wildfire – everyone’s fussing about this guy heading to Maria’s direction. Maria look at him from a distant – he seem familiar ..

TAYLOR
Hey, Maria.

MARIA
What are you doing here ?

TAYLOR
I came here to see you, I miss you so much.
(hugs Maria)

Alex watch both of them, at a corner .. with his own eyes ..

MARIA
Taylor, you shouldn’t be here.
(looks down, frustated – then look up again )
You left me! I saw you kissed Lila !

Alex walk towards Maria, trying to prove that Rachel’s telling truth .. Rachel saw, an evil smile formed on her face ..

ALEX
Maria. Who’s this ?

MARIA
(panic eyes ..)
Urm, this is Taylor, he’s my ..

TAYLOR
(cuts in, then curiously ask)
Boyfriend. Who are you ?

MARIA
(faces Taylor)
EX-BOYFRIEND. Taylor is just visiting ..

TAYLOR
Well .. (his arms placed on Maria’s shoulder)
Maria and I decided to get back together .. again.

MARIA
(shrugs off Taylor’s arm)
Alex, I ..

ALEX
(interrupt)
Is it true ? You’re dating him again ?

TAYLOR
Yes, she is.

MARIA
(points at Taylor)
You, keep your mouth shut. Let me talk
(faces Alex)

ALEX
Save it. You don’t have to tell me, I get it – you don’t want me.
(walks away)

MARIA
ALEX !
(punches Taylor’s arm)

(walks away, Camilla tag along – trying to comfort her)

TAYLOR

The huge crowd starting to reduce in size – left Taylor alone ..

Doorbell rings – Rachel walks toward the door, opens it ..

RACHEL
(shocked)
What are you doing here ? I told you to see me later, not NOWWW ! She’s in her room.

TAYLOR
I’m running out of cash. I need the rest now.

RACHEL
Can’t you just wait a little bit longer ?

TAYLOR
Dude, 200 bucks isn’t enough. You couldn’t even pay a motel for one night.

Rachel looks to her left and right, looks at Taylor back

RACHEL
Fine, come in.

Rachel invites Taylor in to the living room. She took Joe’s cheque book on the table and write the amount of money, forge Joe’s signature.


INT : LIVING ROOM

RACHEL
(hands the cheque to Taylor)
There you go.

TAYLOR
Hey, you said you’re giving me full !

RACHEL
Well, I still need you. I’ll give half of the rest later ..
(pull back the cheque)
ONLY IF I’m satisfied.

TAYLOR
Trust me, I’m good at what I do. She won’t even notice it.

RACHEL
You better be.
(hand the cheque back)
Now, get out of my house.

Taylor walks out from the penthouse. Sophie is just about to enter the living room, out from the kitchen. A popsicle held in her hand ..

SOPHIE
Why is that guy in here 5 seconds ago ?

RACHEL
What else .. money.

SOPHIE
(chokes while eating the popsicle)
You WHATT ? You bribe him ?!

RACHEL
Oh, get a grip Soph ! Don’t act so innocent - you’ve already into this mess.

SOPHIE
Fine, I won’t say a word. Anyway, the prom’s coming up. Who’s going to be your date ?

RACHEL
Alex, duhh ! After all, my plan work out well - I’m letting someone else to be his date.

SOPHIE
Oh righhht ! I TOTALLY forgot ! You’re so meant to be with Alex.

RACHEL
I know .. can’t get any better !

SOPHIE
Uh .. about the prom dress, Rach - Daddy stop my Visa after he found out I’ve splurge on H&M. So, I was thinking – maybe we could shop something like Sears ?

RACHEL
SEARS .. Are you NUTS ? I rather die than wearing Sears to prom. Anyway, some designer’s making my prom dress – it’s going to be fabulous !

SOPHIE
Oh. Wow, that’s .. uh- great. Yay. I guess I’ll just have to ..

RACHEL
(interupt Sophie, looks at her chipped nail polish)
Oh hell no, my nail polish ! Sophie !
(waves her hand to Sophie)

Sophie hids her frustation, puts on a smile and walks to her side, helping out doing a quick manicure fix.

INT : MARIA’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

Maria blogging on her laptop

MARIA (V.O.)
After a huge fight at college, I just couldn’t stop thinking about it. I tried to sleep but fail to. So, I jump out from my bed and start blogging. As I was typing, I heard a knock on the door. The door open – It was my father, Joe.

JOE
Maria .. can I come in ?

MARIA
Urmm .. sure.

JOE
I didn’t know you’re still awake. Why aren’t you sleeping yet ?

MARIA
(lie smoothly)
Uhh .. homework ..

JOE
Oh, well I came here to give you this ..
(took out something from his pocket, a white box tied with a black ribbon)

MARIA
Uhh, thanks but my birthday was two weeks ago

JOE
(chuckles)
It’s not your birthday present. Just open it ..

While Joe is talking with Maria, Rachel was passing by and heard their conversation. She quietly stand infront of Maria’s bedroom door and listen to the whole conversation. Maria opens it.

MARIA
(face brightens up)
Wow .. Dad ! You don’t have to do this.

JOE
It belongs to your mother, I gave it to her when we met. I want you to have it.

MARIA
Thank you, it really means a lot to me.

JOE
Well .. I don’t want to bother you. I still have a plane to catch. Goodnight.

Joe walks out– as soon as Rachel heard his footsteps, she quickly ran off to her room.

INT : MARIA’S BEDROOM – DAY 14

Maria pack her things for college, then walks out from her room. Then, Rachel snuck in to Maria’s room, start looking for the object that Joe gave yesterday ..

RACHEL
Where is that thing ?

Searching and searching, suddenly .. she sees a small, thin strap necklace with a pearl ring on Maria’s dressing table.

RACHEL
(looks at that necklace)
So, this is what Joe gave you, huh ?
Pretty little thing .. looks like I’m taking it.

Rachel heard the knob open, she quickly hides under the bed. Maria enters her room and took the necklace, wears it. When Maria exits, Rachel moves out and frustated when the necklace wasn’t on the dressing table.

RACHEL
Darn it. She took it already.

MARIA
Cam, I don’t feel like going to prom.

CAMILLA
Why not ?

MARIA
Alex will be there and I’m sure he won’t listen the whole story. Besides, Rachel will be extremely happy that she could have Alex.

CAMILLA
Uh-uh ! You’re coming with me. Who needs them anyway. Listen, we’re going to have fun! Come on, I don’t want to leave you alone ..

MARIA
(unsure)
I don’t know ..

CAMILLA
(flutters her eyelashes)

MARIA
(surrender)

CAMILLA

MARIA
So, where are we exactly ?

CAMILLA
This is Scoop – my sister, Alice owns this store. Her designs are awesome !

A small, pixie-like woman in her 30’s came out – it looks like she’s dancing. She wore a long cardi with ruffled top and skinnies, top it off with ballet flats.

ALICE
Okay, Cam – what’s the emergency ?

CAMILLA
This is Maria, she desperately needs a prom dress.

ALICE
And that’s your emergency ?

CAMILLA
Hey ! I just walk in this stilleto’s and my feet hurts like hell. Less nagging, more helping.

ALICE
Fine, you’re lucky I’m not telling mom.
(looks at Maria, circling around her)
Hmm .. wait here, I may have something that suits you.
(turn around, walks behind)

MARIA
You’re not buying one for yourself ?

CAMILLA
No, I’ve already took one from this store yesterday – Alice didn’t know about that.

About 2 minutes later, Alice came out with a dress. It was a gorgeous red print dress ..

ALICE
This is cute - great for dates, prom and even outings.

CAMILLA
Yeahh, this is soo you, Maria ! I like it a lot ! What do you think ?

MARIA
(took the dress from Alice and puts in on top of her body)
I love it! Andd .. the colour is amazing !

CAMILLA
Okay, we’ll borrow it.

ALICE
Did you just knock your head on something ? My shop isn’t somekind of ‘rent centre’. Buy it or dream it – your call.

CAMILLA
Oh come on, Alice ! Just one night – we promise we’ll take good care.
(knocks Maria’s elbow hard)

MARIA
Oww ! Uh .. yeah, I will.

ALICE
(eyeing both of them curiously, bite her lower lip)
Fine. Before midnight .. or you’ll ..

CAMILLA

Maria and Camilla walks out from Scoop.

CAMILLA
I’m starving. Let’s grab a bite ..
(stop walking, points in a direction)
Hold it. Maria, isn’t that your stepmother ?

Maria look at her direction. There was Emma walking with another guy. She didn’t notice Maria – laughing at the guy, holding his arm. The guy is carrying some shopping bags.

MARIA (V.0.)

(gave a furious look)

Maria and Camilla headed to the punch table. Rachel noticed, surprised to see them but hides it perfectly.

Taylor and Sophie who’s trying to hide from Maria ends up bumping into Rachel.

No ! You got it all wrong. Taylor and I aren’t getting back together. It was all Rachel behind it – She’s trying to break us up ! Taylor is part of the plan. That’s why you saw him the other day.

Rachel saw Alex and Maria talking – fear that she’s going to spoil her plan. She wants to stop but couldn’t so she just stood and watch.

ALEX
Look, I can’t talk right now – I got to perform ..

MARIA
(mad)
You know what, have it your way. It’s up to you whether you believe it or not.
(walks away)

Alex sees Maria walking away while Rachel smiling – satisfied that Alex didn’t buy her story. Alex went on stage, with his guitar ..

As soon Maria walks towards Rachel’s direction, Rachel “accidently” bump on Maria’s shoulder.

MARIA
(turn back and look mad, faces Rachel)

The scene becomes tense – the crowds started to quiet down. Alex who just about to perform, went silent – staring at both of them.

RACHEL

(shock in horror)
What’s the price ? ALEX ? Well, here’s your chance – you can have him. You’re very good in the game that I don’t want to play. So, I’m done now.

I asked Rachel personally to return it. It was quite hard for the first 30 minutes, she refused to co-operate.

MARIA
(chuckles)

(kneel down on his knee)

MARIA
(confused)
Alex, what are you doing ?

ALEX
Maria, I’m madly in love with you. Would you want to spend the rest of my life with me ?

MARIA

Yeah .. but please say yes. Everyone’s staring and it’s creeping them out.

The whole crowd applauded, instead of Alex wears the necklace on Maria – he took out the ring and put it on her fourth finger – kissed her hand.

Maria searching for a seat, her hand carries a small luggage bag. All the passengers staring at her, Maria didn’t look. She looked messed up but didn’t care. She then took a seat near to a window, bus took off to New York. She started to remember flashbacks ..


MARIA (V.O.)

MARIA (V.O.)
Papa was never dead. He is still alive, living in New York. His name is – JOE STEWART – a famous American socialite. I didn’t give her a chance to tell the rest of her story – feeling angry, frustated for lying to me all this while. I was mad at her – told her to leave me alone. She told me on the night of my 16th birthday.

She died the same night – heart attack.
That was the last conversation I’ve had with my mother. Now, she’s gone forever and I didn’t get a chance to forgive her.


Flashback to reality. A teardrop can be seen strolling down on Maria’s pink left cheek.

She pressed the door bell - a girl who's around Maria's age opens the door.

I'm looking for Joe Stewart.

RACHEL
He’s having his breakfast right now with my mom.

RACHEL
(look annoyed)
Hello ! Emma Johnson - American Vogue editor. She’s like .. the most famous person everr.

MARIA

Three months ago – FYI, I’m his stepdaughter.

MARIA

There Joe Stewart is - sipping on his morning coffee, reading the newspaper while his wife, Emma doing some final editing on Vogue's next month cover.

(looks up from the newspaper and smiled)

Maria was stunned that she coudld barely speak. Finally, she meets her father
face-to-face ..

(gulped and slowly speak)

While Emma was busy editing and heard the news, she abruptly stop, her pen was flown away and fell on the patio floor. Same goes to Joe's coffee cup - fell and broke into pieces. Joe's and Emma's jaw dropped while Rachel screamed.

She’s an imposter, this girl is lying to you !

RACHEL

JOE

EMMA

Another girl walking beside her – she’s not as pretty as Rachel, but she is stylish. As Rachel passes Maria, she pulls down her sunglasses and look at Maria, evil and hated ..

Oh my god, Rachel, the worst bitch of all bitches I’ve ever met. Pretty but spoilt - I don’t get why everyone adores her.

Alex walk towards Maria, trying to prove that Rachel’s telling truth .. Rachel saw, an evil smile formed on her face ..

MARIA
(panic eyes ..)

(cuts in, then curiously ask)

MARIA
(faces Taylor)

Doorbell rings – Rachel walks toward the door, opens it ..

RACHEL

TAYLOR
Dude, 200 bucks isn’t enough. You couldn’t even pay a motel for one night.

Rachel looks to her left and right, looks at Taylor back

Rachel invites Taylor in to the living room. She took Joe’s cheque book on the table and write the amount of money, forge Joe’s signature.

(hands the cheque to Taylor)

TAYLOR
Hey, you said you’re giving me full !

RACHEL
Well, I still need you. I’ll give half of the rest later ..
(pull back the cheque)
ONLY IF I’m satisfied.

Trust me, I’m good at what I do. She won’t even notice it.

RACHEL

(hand the cheque back)

Taylor walks out from the penthouse. Sophie is just about to enter the living room, out from the kitchen. A popsicle held in her hand ..

RACHEL

SOPHIE
(chokes while eating the popsicle)

RACHEL
Oh, get a grip Soph ! Don’t act so innocent - you’ve already into this mess.

SEARS .. Are you NUTS ? I rather die than wearing Sears to prom. Anyway, some designer’s making my prom dress – it’s going to be fabulous !

SOPHIE

Sophie hids her frustation, puts on a smile and walks to her side, helping out doing a quick manicure fix.

After a huge fight at college, I just couldn’t stop thinking about it. I tried to sleep but fail to. So, I jump out from my bed and start blogging. As I was typing, I heard a knock on the door. The door open – It was my father, Joe.

JOE
Maria .. can I come in ?

MARIA
Urmm .. sure.

JOE
I didn’t know you’re still awake. Why aren’t you sleeping yet ?

MARIA
(lie smoothly)
Uhh .. homework ..

JOE
Oh, well I came here to give you this ..
(took out something from his pocket, a white box tied with a black ribbon)

MARIA
Uhh, thanks but my birthday was two weeks ago

JOE
(chuckles)
It’s not your birthday present. Just open it ..

While Joe is talking with Maria, Rachel was passing by and heard their conversation. She quietly stand infront of Maria’s bedroom door and listen to the whole conversation. Maria opens it.

MARIA
(face brightens up)
Wow .. Dad ! You don’t have to do this.

JOE
It belongs to your mother, I gave it to her when we met. I want you to have it.

MARIA
Thank you, it really means a lot to me.

JOE
Well .. I don’t want to bother you. I still have a plane to catch. Goodnight.

Joe walks out– as soon as Rachel heard his footsteps, she quickly ran off to her room.

Maria pack her things for college, then walks out from her room. Then, Rachel snuck in to Maria’s room, start looking for the object that Joe gave yesterday ..

Searching and searching, suddenly .. she sees a small, thin strap necklace with a pearl ring on Maria’s dressing table.

RACHEL
(looks at that necklace)
So, this is what Joe gave you, huh ?
Pretty little thing .. looks like I’m taking it.

Rachel heard the knob open, she quickly hides under the bed. Maria enters her room and took the necklace, wears it. When Maria exits, Rachel moves out and frustated when the necklace wasn’t on the dressing table.

RACHEL
Darn it. She took it already.

Cam, I don’t feel like going to prom.

This is Scoop – my sister, Alice owns this store. Her designs are awesome !

A small, pixie-like woman in her 30’s came out – it looks like she’s dancing. She wore a long cardi with ruffled top and skinnies, top it off with ballet flats.

ALICE
Okay, Cam – what’s the emergency ?

CAMILLA
This is Maria, she desperately needs a prom dress.

ALICE
And that’s your emergency ?

CAMILLA
Hey ! I just walk in this stilleto’s and my feet hurts like hell. Less nagging, more helping.

ALICE
Fine, you’re lucky I’m not telling mom.
(looks at Maria, circling around her)
Hmm .. wait here, I may have something that suits you.
(turn around, walks behind)

MARIA
You’re not buying one for yourself ?

CAMILLA
No, I’ve already took one from this store yesterday – Alice didn’t know about that.

About 2 minutes later, Alice came out with a dress. It was a gorgeous red print dress ..

ALICE
This is cute - great for dates, prom and even outings.

CAMILLA
Yeahh, this is soo you, Maria ! I like it a lot ! What do you think ?

MARIA
(took the dress from Alice and puts in on top of her body)
I love it! Andd .. the colour is amazing !

CAMILLA
Okay, we’ll borrow it.

ALICE
Did you just knock your head on something ? My shop isn’t somekind of ‘rent centre’. Buy it or dream it – your call.

CAMILLA
Oh come on, Alice ! Just one night – we promise we’ll take good care.
(knocks Maria’s elbow hard)

MARIA

(eyeing both of them curiously, bite her lower lip)

Maria look at her direction. There was Emma walking with another guy. She didn’t notice Maria – laughing at the guy, holding his arm. The guy is carrying some shopping bags.

At that moment, I knew that Emma wasn’t faithful. She’s cheating with another guy – younger, of course. I’m dissapointed but deep down, I should have known it all along.

CAMILLA
You know what, I’m not hungry. Come on.
(took Maria to a different route)

All students seems to show up at prom. Everyone look great – girls in dresses, boys in suits. The music’s playing – some of them dance, some just sitting around, eating .. The atmosphere is nice .. Sophie is happily chatting with Rachel.

SOPHIE
Don’t we look so hot in these dresses, Rach ?

RACHEL
(gave a furious look)

SOPHIE
I-I mean .. you. Of course, you’re much more gorgeous than the rest of us.

RACHEL
OBVIOUSLY Soph, I’m so winning prom queen and Alex will be my king .. (spots Taylor, looks shocked).. What’s he doing here ?

SOPHIE
(looks behind)
Uh, well .. I sorta invited him.

RACHEL

SOPHIE

As Camilla and Maria busy talking, Taylor and Sophie saw both of them and looked shocked.

OMG ! Rachel’s gonna get me killed. What are we’re going to do ?

TAYLOR
We better move away now .. fast.
(walks away)

(follows him)

Maria and Camilla headed to the punch table. Rachel noticed, surprised to see them but hides it perfectly.

RACHEL
My my, look what the cat drag in.

CAMILLA
In case you wondering, ALL students are invited. That includes Maria too.

RACHEL
(faces Camilla)
YOU! You better not mess up with me.

CAMILLA
Is that a threat ?

RACHEL
Absolutely.

MARIA
(interrupts their figthing conversation)
Okay, that’s enough ! Cam, calm down.
Rachel, stop it. She’s got nothing to do with us.

Taylor and Sophie who’s trying to hide from Maria ends up bumping into Rachel.

RACHEL
Oww ! Who did .. (turns around, eyes bulged out)

MARIA
Taylor ? What are you doing here AGAIN ?

TAYLOR
(nervously answer)
Uhh .. just, enjoying the party ?

RACHEL
(pulls Sophie’s hand, talk to her at a corner)

No ! You got it all wrong. Taylor and I aren’t getting back together. It was all Rachel behind it – She’s trying to break us up ! Taylor is part of the plan. That’s why you saw him the other day.

Rachel saw Alex and Maria talking – fear that she’s going to spoil her plan. She wants to stop but couldn’t so she just stood and watch.

ALEX
Look, I can’t talk right now – I got to perform ..

MARIA
(mad)
You know what, have it your way. It’s up to you whether you believe it or not.
(walks away)

Alex sees Maria walking away while Rachel smiling – satisfied that Alex didn’t buy her story. Alex went on stage, with his guitar ..

As soon Maria walks towards Rachel’s direction, Rachel “accidently” bump on Maria’s shoulder.

RACHEL
Watch where you’re going, STEPSISTER.

MARIA
(turn back and look mad, faces Rachel)

The scene becomes tense – the crowds started to quiet down. Alex who just about to perform, went silent – staring at both of them.

RACHEL
What’s with the sourface, Maria ? Feeling sad by the fact that I .. WON ?

MARIA
(shock in horror)
What’s the price ? ALEX ? Well, here’s your chance – you can have him. You’re very good in the game that I don’t want to play. So, I’m done now.
(took out her necklace)
Take it.

RACHEL
(grabs it)

MARIA
(angry)
I don’t want – any of it !
(walks out with Camilla)

Alex enters the house, into the living room. Rachel is sitting on the couch, reading a magazine.

Both of them got kicked out from the house, FINALLY. Dad and Emma went officially separated six months later. Emma got fired from her fashion magazine, humiliated in public – of course. I’ve heard that Rachel and Emma worked as cleaners at NYU’s cafeteria.

I’m so tired .. and my nails look terrible already !

SOPHIE
